Market History

Stevenage Indoor Market came in from the cold in late 1973 following the closure of the Stevenage Forum outdoor market. Back then, trading days were Thursday, Friday and Saturday but, thanks to the overwhelming support of the people of Stevenage, the Wednesday was soon added and this trading week survives to the present day. Three businesses still survive from the 1973 opening - Stevenage Vac Centre, The Wool Stall and Schoolsmart - all of whom also traded on the original Stevenage Forum site.

Stevenage Indoor Market has seen off several tricky periods; surviving recessions, illegal markets and the introduction of out of town Retail Parks. Throughout all of this Stevenage Borough Council have maintained their support of the Market and, at present, Council Officers are working closely with the Market traders (represented by their dedicated and enthusiastic Committee) to ensure that the Market offers a vibrant, comfortable and successful retail environment. As a result, the Stevenage Indoor Market traders are confident that they offer a range of specialist and traditional goods that will be very hard to equal.
